“Here!! Jump in!!”,I looked up to see a lorry driver open his passenger door while beckoning on me to enter.
I was hesitant at first, who knows? He might be working for them and I might as well be falling for their trap hook, line and sinker.
Looking to and fro, trying to decide,I stopped for a moment.
Keep on running?
Accept the offer?
I guess I deliberated for too long, before I knew it all possible means of escaping were out.
I was surrounded with ONLY one option, the lorry.
I jumped in and yelled at the driver to please drive fast and at the same time crying😩
Couldn’t remember the last time I cried but heck,I didn’t care.
My life was in danger.
As soon as he sped off the windshield was broken into pieces by bullets.
“Get down to the floor!!”,the driver ordered.
No one needed to tell me that.
I kept still, paralyzed with fear and for the first time in three years,I prayed 🙏🙏🙏
I had always thought God had deserted me but no dummy needed to tell me it was only God that could get me out of the mess I was in.
Soon I couldn’t hear the noise from the city again.
“You can get up now”,he said smiling at me warmly.
For the first time that morning I felt a little bit safe😌
We sure covered a LOT of distance.
He must be a really professional driver, I thought to myself.
“Huh where are we?”,I asked just to be sure it still wasn’t a trap.
“We’ve left Lagos, welcome to Ogun state.”
I looked at the surroundings
I had always heard some kids around my previous neighborhood gist about the state.
From what I heard,it was pretty much a neighboring state to Lagos but less busier.
“Wow,thank you so much sir. You just saved my life.”
He smiled again
“You’re welcome. Before you ask how I realized you were in danger, let me explain. I was driving to a site where a construction was going on to deliver blocks to when I saw you running. I didn’t think much of it except for the fact that it didn’t just look like a normal run but I dismissed it and kept on driving to my destination. Then on my way back,I almost ran into you but you were too busy to notice, I looked around and realized some dangerous looking men were after you so I decided to tag along before deciding to help you out. So voila, here we are. Out in another state with a damaged windshield and few dents to my lorry.”,he finished with what I would call a tiny smile.
I took a minute to take in all the had said before replying.
“I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve do….”,I paused before a thought hit me hard.
“Wait ,these guys are dangerous and they’ve probably taken a picture of your lorry’s plate number which is probably why they didn’t keep on chasing us. What if they come for you???”,I asked really alarmed.
He laughed for a while.
“I already thought of the before, after I drop you off to wherever you want,I’ll dump the lorry somewhere far. It’s old anyway and I’ve saved up some money big enough to get me a new one.”
“Hmmmm I’m sorry I boycotted your plans sir and if that’s what you plan on doing then no problem.I’ll ensure I get your contact details before departing with you so I could pay you back. For now,I think I have a place where you could drop me off”,I said all in one breath, getting myself back together with my mind going back to the address Arin gave me.
I gave him the address .
He seemed a little bit surprised at the fact that it was an orphanage but didn’t question it.
Off we went to somewhere I thought I’d probably live for the rest of my life😐😐😐
